In the prologue, the ISA sets up their Cruiser airship the "New Sun" up in the clouds of Helghan over the capital city of Pyrrhus. Sev and the rest of the ISA invade the city. The invasion is seemingly successful until the main defense system is brought online, which activates many arc towers throughout the city and much of the first wave of the assult force is obliterated. Scientist Evelyn Batton tracks the power source of the arc towers to an element called Petrusite. She discovers large portions of the unknown element around the outskirts at Tharsis Refinery. Evelyn and Alpha Team travel to the outskirts of the city in an attempt to find a way to disable the arc towers. While Sev and Rico go off to activate a communications tower, Garza, Natko and Evelyn are captured by Helghast. Sev and Rico find their squad, however Rico acts too quickly and Garza is mortally wounded and later dies. The ISA retreats to their base, the New Sun. During Sev's mourning for Garza, the Helghast attack the ISA fleet and invade the New Sun. In the assault, Helghast Colonel Radec successfully advances to the bridge and kills both Evelyn and the ISA colonel, Jan Templar.
Tasked with securing Pyrrhus, the Capital City, the team quickly discovers that the Helghast are a formidable enemy on their home planet. Not only have they adjusted to the planet's hostile conditions, they have also harnessed a source of power they can now use against the ISA. Sev discovers his squad isn't just fighting enemy forces - their fiercest opponent may be the planet itself.
HelgHast
The Helghast are larger that normal humans, and assume giant proportions. They have adapted to the atmosphere and harsh environ of their planet of exile, Helghan. They must breathe a modified gas which they inhale though a helmet that they always wear, which includes a glowing orange set of goggles. The very sight of a Helghast strikes fear into their enemies on the battlefield.
Helghast are a faction of human descendants who colonized the planet Helghan many generations ago. The planet's harsh environment forced the Helghast to adapt and mutate so much that they can no longer be considered human. They are stronger, faster and more resilient than their human cousins, and possess a burning hatred for humanity. Except for a small number of Half-breed Helghast and trained troopers, they require a gas mask and air processing tank that creates air similar to that found on the planet Helghan.
